Hi, I'm Erica.

I am a third-year PhD student in the Chmielus Lab at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) in Materials Science and Engineering. I completed my Bachelor's degree at Pitt in 2015, also earning a degree through the University Honors College requiring a Master's-level thesis. My long-term career goals are focused on microscopy in materials science.

My topic experience includes additive manufacturing of metals and multifunctional materials, particularly Ni-Mn-based magnetic shape memory alloys and magnetocaloric materials.

Equipment skills

Microscopy is my passion. I am most familiar with digital optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (including energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and electron backscatter diffraction), and micro-computed tomography; but I have also used transmission electron microscopy, differential interference contrast microscopy, and atomic force microscopy.

The fusion of art and science that can be seen through a microscope is unparalleled by any I have ever experienced. Microscopy is a multi-faceted tool giving us the ability to probe previously unseen mysteries and share our findings through universally relatable images. Microscopy is also the reason my job is so much fun.

Involvement

I have been a part of many organizations over my years at Pitt as an undergraduate and now as a graduate student. I am currently the President of the Engineering Graduate Student Organization (EGSO), Counselor for the Pitt Society of Women Engineers (PittSWE), Assistant Area 34 Director for District 13 Toastmasters, and Regional Liaison Chair for the Microscopy Society of America Student Council

As President of EGSO, I worked with the VP to restructure the organization and increase the amount/quality of our events. My role in PittSWE is a consulting one currently, but I was VP my senior year. Toastmasters is a public speaking and leadership organization. I have been in the Oakland Toastmasters club since the 2012, and served as VP Public Relations and President.
